Free for some, fee for others

Blogged on March 12, 2010

When I left my company in Feb 2009, I had to surrender my company issued Bberry :(  this forced me to head to the nearest Wireless Waves and pick out a new phone.  I chose the LG Rumour (in orange, cause I like orange).

The phone was associated with Solo Mobile (which is a division of Bell).  I hard a hard time choosing a carrier as I believe all of them suck.  Clayton is with Bell and seemed happy so I signed up.

When I was ready to return to work, I upgraded my cell phone plan from the bare bones essentials (60 mins a month, free texting) to the next plan up to include voicemail and call display.  I checked their plans out and the best value for my money was a package that also included free web browsing.

With the new law introduced to limit cellphone use while driving, I have hardly used my phone, I didn't bother getting a Bluetooth ear piece thingie because I thought it looked ridiculous.  I figured if there was an emergency, I could just pull over and use the phone like a normal person and be done with it.  Anyways, I'm in the car (as a passenger) and wanted to check my hotmail to see if I had any buyers for the washing machine I'm selling and I use the Messaging menu to see how I check email.  There is a function called 'IM & Email'.  There we go.  I click on it and start to go through the set up procedure until I see a nice little message that says...

"This service costs $8.00 per month" and the screen keeps loading giving me no option to hit cancel or do not accept!  I get mad and close the phone down.  How can Hotmail CHARGE for a service that they offer to millions of others online for free.  I have a *free* unlimited browsing package.  So maddening.  I don't really care to look into it as I don't use my phone very often.

Fast forward a few weeks and my bill comes.  I figure it should be pretty low since I don't use it much but it's a lot higher than anticipated (aren't they all?).  I see a lovely $10.00 charge for using the Hotmail service (!).  It's Friday at 6pm.  Of course when I go to get their toll free 1-800 I discover their office is closed.  Oh and yeah they are closed on weekends too.  WTF?  I ended up calling them this morning because I'm lying in bed, deathly ill from a virus I've had since Saturday and I remember I've got to call them to take the charge off and get to the bottom of why I was billed in the first place.

I go to the website to download my bill to see the specific charges and I get error messages on the screen.  Grr.  I reach a CSR fairly quick and explain the situation.  She confirms that yes there is a charge and if I want to access email for free, to do it through the browser opposed to the email function.  I told her there was no way I 'accepted' the charges and she couldn't speak to that.  What a scam.

I couldn't find any reference to the Hotmail charge on the Solo site, but I did find this on the Bell site:

Windows Live Messenger & Windows Live Hotmail

$8 per month plus Mobile Browser charges

  • Receive real-time notification of incoming e-mail.
  • Send, receive, forward and delete mail from your mobile phone.
  • Just one application for both Messenger & Hotmail services.

The charges were removed and I won't be using that feature but all in all I am still not impressed with Solo and won't be renewing my contract when it ends.

Road Rage

Blogged on March 5, 2010

It's shortly after 8pm and Clayton and I left the RV park where his parents 'live' and visiting his Sister Faye and Husband Warren and their two adorable children (Cainan 2 and Mikhail 4).  Mason is quite tired so he is fast asleep a few minutes after we start our drive back home.  The drive is about 15 minutes and we do it often.  Coming down Burnaby Mountain Parkway, a truck quickly speeds up behind us and passes us on the left (double line).  We weren't going turtle slow (just over speed limit probably) and so Clayton, angry that this guy would be suck a d*ck, flashes his high beams.  I don't like when he does this because you never know if the car is going to slam on his brakes causing you to slam into the back of him or what.

So Jerkface abruptly pulls over to the side of the road, we continue on and then he's behind us flashing HIS lights and tailgaiting us.  I start freaking out, Clayton is fingering him (which I also didn't like him doing) because now they are pissed off at eachother.  Jerkface is driving dangerously close to our bumper and I'm freaking out.  Mason is still fast asleep and I lock the doors.  Clayton tells me to call 911 to report this guys ridiculous driving road rage behavior and slows our vehicle down a bit (we are now in a single lane so Jerkface can't pass us).  I eventually figure out how to use his Iphone to make a call and connect with the police.  As I'm on the phone, we are getting closer to our house and the road changes into two lanes, Jerkface passes us again and glares at me.  I keep talking to 911 and now I'm able to give a good description of the driver.  Male, 25-30 years old, facial hair with a baseball hat.  Very angry mean face.  I tell the police he crossed over a double line and had NO reason to pass us or drive so aggressively.

While I'm on the phone, we approach an intersection and the light is about to turn red.  Jerkface who is now slightly ahead of us cuts off a car so he turn into the gas station and exit out the cross street to avoid the red.  He obviously knows I'm on the phone with the cops.  We give the license plate # to the police and keep on driving, Jerkface is now way ahead of us (speeding) and we eventually lose sight of him at the top of the hill.  We turn off on our street, I finish the call with the RCMP.

We are now home and the car is parked and I'm shaking.  Horrible things flash in my mind like what if he didn't get around the red light and he got out of his car?   I was pretty terrified and started to cry. (obviously emotional to begin with from the week I've had).  I've heard of a lot of violent road rage cases where people have been assaulted or shot.  This guy looked mean and I didn't doubt for a second that he would have wanted to fight.  I was glad Mason was asleep and didn't even wake up when Clayton accidentally set the car alarm off lol.  It took me about 10 mins to calm down.

About 1/2 hr later the phone rang, the RCMP had tracked down the owner of the car and the owner was female, admitted she was in Burnaby 1/2 hr previous but I explained it wasn't a female.  I failed to confirm was the make/model of the truck to ensure they had contacted the right person.  It was too late anyhow.  I'm assuming that the driver was a husband, friend,bf, kid whatever.  No repercussion.  I really hope that the owner had a good talking to the driver and told them what an idiot they were.  Those types of people get other people killed.  And for no good reason.  I would admit if Clayton did something wrong or drive unsafely but we were just driving down the street, having a good chat.

I'm glad that we are safe and the situation didn't escalate.  It's tough being a parent, things change.  Your fear of something 'bad' happening to yourself or family increases so much.  I've become a much safer driver, I try not to speed, I don't run yellow lights and I do a complete stop at all stop signs (like you are supposed to).  I just wish everyone else drove like that too.

Low battery

Blogged on March 4, 2010

I recently blogged about Mason's first day at daycare and I also blogged about my first day at work but I haven't really told all.  It is day #3 at work and I.am.exhausted.  I don't think there is a better word for it.  I have a new found respect for working Mothers (and even more  for working single moms with limited support).  I didn't really \ how I was going to feel about returning to work.  There were the pros:

  1. Adult conversation
  2. Regular meals
  3. Brain activity
  4. BIGGER paychecks

And the cons

  1. Being away from Masey
  2. Paying for daycare
  3. Waking up 2hrs earlier
  4. Commuting
  5. The day going by so fast and having limited time in the evenings
  6. The rush of the mornings and evenings
  7. Paying for parking $200/mo

Oh I'm sure I could keep adding to the list but let's not make me more upset than I already am.  It's a weird feeling to be off for a year and then return to the same job.  I'm not new and I know most of the work yet I feel out of place.  My first day I discovered that they had a get together with the Mom's of the company with their babies.  I guess they forgot to call me.  My feelings are pretty hurt.  My department is full of new staff and my sidekick left the company last year.   There are two new people in my little department and my replacement is staying on.  I really feel like a 3rd wheel because it's too soon to integrate me and I'm not sure they need 3 people in the dept.  My boss has suggested cross training me in another department but I don't have any interest in doing that type of work.

I'm trying to stay focused and positive and just see how things go, hopefully things will change.  Aside from my specific job, the commute is draining.  It used to be 1/2 hr but picking Mason up from daycare takes another 15 mins so almost two hours sitting in a car per day.  Then parking it in a garage that costs almost $200, it really doesn't seem worth it.  The good thing that I try not to take for granted is that I work for a great solid company that offers great pay and good benefits..which are hard to find these days.  I just am torn, I'd love to stay home with Mason and I'm not sure even if that's best for him.  He's doing so well in daycare and learning a lot.  More than I could teach him.

I also have a minor cold right now (hopped on dayquil) and I also have pms.  Not a fun week :(

The end of the Internets!?!

Blogged on February 24, 2010

**NEWSFLASH!**

Electrical storms are going to wipe out the Internet (perhaps forever) so this is my last chance to write all about my passions, to you my dedicated readers.  What am I going to do!? ...panic is starting to set in. Oh dear.  Okay get it together.  You CAN do this!

pas·sion/ˈpæʃən/  [pash-uhn] –noun

1. a strong or extravagant fondness, enthusiasm, or desire for anything.

I am passionate about helping, mostly people but I’ve been known to rescue an animal or two from the SPCA.  My passion for helping started in my early years, as soon as my Mom had my Brother Mike in 1978, I was second hand..um girl.  I loved to help, it made me feel good.  Moving along to elementary school, I was first to volunteer to shake out the chalk brushes after classes (do they even use chalk boards nowadays??) and then when I became old enough to volunteer (I think 16) I remember my Dad driving me to the local society for abused women.  I was dressed in ‘nice clothes’ for an interview to be a babysitter while their Mom’s were in therapy.  My volunteer career didn’t end there; I continued to volunteer all throughout my life (RCMP – Victim Support Worker, Earth Day, all kinds of events).

Whether it is opening a door for someone leaving a building, babysitting free of charge for a single mom, or starting my own Money Group (www.dollarsandsensedivas.viviti.com) to help others get out of debt, I’ll do it!  I love to help!  And now that the Internet could possibly be gone, I am off to use my limited online time to check out resources to help others with their Internet withdrawal (this is a serious disorder) and spend all my free time to helping out where I can!

Yorkshire

Blogged on February 23, 2010

As stated on Wikipedia:

Yorkshire pudding is a dish that originated in Yorkshire, England, and has attained wide popularity. It is made from batter and most often served with roast beef, chicken, or any meal in which there is gravy.

My favorite memories is Mama or my Mom making this special food with dinner.  It's not a pudding and it's not a muffin.  Hot out of the oven with melted butter, mmmmmm!  So I thought I'd try making it myself but I have to admit, I'm not making it from scratch..yet.  I bought a prepackaged yorkshire mix from Clubhouse!  A lady in the grocery line up asked me how the mix was.  I told her I didn't know as I hadn't made it yet!

To be honest, I really think that the mix isn't going to turn out.  Making YP from scratch is extremely difficult as sometimes it doesn't rise or it turns out tough.   The package has pretty simple directions.  Add 1/2 tsp of veg oil to  a  muffin tin (6) and warm in the oven for 3 minutes.  Then add mixture, 1 egg and 1/3 c water.  16 minutes later you'll have 6 lovely puddings.  Or will you?

So here was my attempt...

The verdict?

DELICIOUS!  Not much more to say than that, I ate all three (my portion) at once.  Hehe.  The rest are for Clayton, I hope he likes them.  Actually, no I don't cause then I get the rest lol.

Maybe I will try making them from scratch next but why bother, the mix was like $2.00 and it's so much easier!!

Kitchen Sink Soup

Blogged on February 23, 2010

Kitchen Sink Soup

Prep time: 30 minutes  Cook time: 20 minutes

Makes 5 servings

So this isn't a recipe I found online, nor is it one in a book.  It's something I made up!  Yes, ME! Take that - Mom who said I would never cook and my family would starve :)

  • 4 Vegetable Bouillon cubes
  • 8 cups of water
  • 3 green onions, sliced
  • 3 stalks celery, sliced
  • 10 baby white potatoes
  • 1 can of corn
  • 1 can of lentils
  • 3 medium carrots, sliced thin
  • 1 small tomato, diced
  • 4 garlic cloves, minced
  • 3 cups (dry) egg noodles
  • 1 tsp oregano & basil
  • 1/2 tsp of rosemary & black pepper
  • 1 bay leaf

Make the vegetable broth (1 cube per 2 cups water) in a large pot.  Set to high heat and reduce to medium heat once it starts to boil.  Chop up all the veggies and dump them in!  Boil the noodles in a separate pot until cooked thoroughly, add to veggie mixture when ready.  Add spices and stir well.

Serve with Yorkshire pudding! (recipe on next blog)

The Verdict?

Pretty darn good!  It was hearty simple soup.  Clayton said that it probably would have been better with barley instead of lentils so I may try that out next time.  Would I make this again? Possibly but I think I'll try the barley and a chowder base instead.

Good contacts, bad glasses

Blogged on February 23, 2010

My first experience with Clearly Contacts was last year when I was unhappy with purchasing my contact lenses through the optical places in the mall.  I had seen the Clearly Contacts Mini Coopers all around town and thought for my next purchase, I would buy from them.

So the time came, I visited their website and saved a bundle! I was happy, I told all my friends and joined their fan page on Facebook.  (ooooh!)

I became more happy when I received an email stating they were have a *free* glasses promotion across Canada.  500 pairs of glasses (frames and lenses!).  All you had to do was register and you were provided with a date for your city on when you could buy the glasses on their website.  I received my reminder email, February 23 was the date! I cleared my calendar because I figured I'd be waiting all day for this email with the promo code.  Last night I read that the code would come between 8-9am.  Okay, get up early!

I went to their website, found 6 pairs of glasses that I like (in case they sold out of the first pick).  I got my prescription out and had Clayton measure my PD (distance between my pupils).  Unlike purchasing glasses through an optician, you cannot 'try them on'.  Clearly Contacts has a virtual 'try on' page where you upload a photo and place the glasses on your face to 'see' what you look like but I found their tool hard to use and all the glasses looked funny.  Everything was set to go!  I got up at 7am and waited until 9AM and at 9:01am I got the email with the promo code.  I rushed to the website.  Put in the glasses and waited....and waited....and finally the page popped up.  I put in the code but it didn't seem to be working.  I went back, tried again and again.  I figured the site was crashing.  A lot of people are participating in this promo.  I finally got frustrated and called Customer Service.  My wait was less than a minute.

I exclaimed that I picked a pair, put in the code but it was still saying I owed $113.00 (the glasses were only $98) Shipping was free but they charged $12 in handling fees.  I told her I wasn't sure what was wrong.  Then it came.

"Oh, you have a high prescription and the lenses you selected (the only one I could) was for a thin frame, you will have to PAY for that".

So I explained, no I don't want to pay.  I'll just choose a different frame.

"No, it's not the frame.  The promotion is only for a 1.5 index frame, which is too low for you.  The frames are FREE, you can pay for the higher lense)"

Um no.  The promotion is for FREE glasses and frames, I don't want to pay extra.  I feel this is discriminatory against people with high prescriptions because CC doesn't want to pay for thinner lenses.  The website does not explain what the 1.5 index lense is for.

"I will speak to my supervisor and get back to you..."

Now I am angry.  It is likely that they will tell me that the 'fine print' says what is allowed and since I have bad eyes and that index doesn't work for me, it's too bad for me.  I am really disappointed in how they ran this promotion.  Perhaps if they explained what an index was, I could have seen from the beginning that it didn't match mine.  I would have still been mad I didn't qualify but at LEAST I would have known and deleted the email instead of getting excited about it and wasting my morning trying to order something I couldn't have.

I put the order through while I was on the phone and it's currently 'on hold'.  I am waiting to hear back from CC on their decision to either let me have the glasses and frames for free or tell me to piss off.  I have a feeling it will be the latter adn if that's the case, I may lose out on a free pair of glasses but they are going to lose out on my continued business.

Not a great way to start my day.

To be continued...

I received an email from Clearly contacts this morning stating that I do not qualify for their promotion and they are willing to give me free frames.  That's not what I signed up for.  They offer a promotion and then discriminate against people with extremely bad eyesight. I have canceled my order, left the fan page of Facebook and will NEVER do business with them again.   I hope losing a customer for $100 was worth it to them.

Maybe now it's time to get laser eye surgery.

Sunset Jamaica Grande - A review

Blogged on February 21, 2010

Sunset Jamaica Grande, Ocho Rios

was our hotel of choice for this years vacation.  Planning a trip to Ocho Rios?  Here is a detailed recent review of this resort? Any comments in red are negative.

General Info

  • 730 rooms in two towers (North and South)
  • Rooms are either 1 king sized or 2 double beds
  • Hotel does not have a 1-800 however it does not charge for incoming calls
  • Credit card required for check in
  • No tipping allowed
  • Languages spoken are English and Patois
  • Staff were very friendly and no pressure to do anything (buy things etc)
  • The towel card was exchanged for one clean towel (no limits per day)
  • There are ATM machines on site (Scotia Bank)
  • Jamaica's weather is quite hot (a lot more so than Mexico for example) and 75% of the guests were burnt (some horribly) so ensure you bring at least 3 bottles of sunscreen and aftercare (aloe etc)
  • The live shows go until 11pm so prepared for noise until then (the rooms did not block out the sound)
  • The deck sliding door must remained closed at all times to prevent condensation in the suite
  • The garbages were full of plastic cups (no recycling!)
  • The resort is also home to 4 or 5 small cats who wander around (especially at dinner time)
  • Parts of the resort are designated for smokers (in the buffet too! yuck)

Check In

  • Check in was extremely fast compared to other resorts I stayed at
  • Greeted with a smile and a plastic cup of cold fruit punch
  • Receptionist was pleasant; signed us in, gave us our wristbands and two key cards for our suite
  • Did not receive room key or towel key.  Was confused by this process.  Ended up having to come back the next day to get one.

Room

  • The rooms decoration was typical of Jamaican resorts however could have used a makeover/upgrade
  • The room was clean, had a tea station
  • The bed was incredibly firm and could have had a better mattress (considering it was a 4 * hotel)
  • The TV had many channels on it which came in handy for rainy days
  • The shower pressure was strong enough to take your skin off, but I liked it!
  • The shower came equipped with a body wash/shampoo dispenser!
  • The bathroom water is purified and safe to drink
  • In room safe (either cc deposit for lock or $15USD refundable)
  • Iron and ironing board
  • Hairdryer
  • Self controlled AC
  • Rooms are cleaned once a day ranging from morning to afternoon
  • Our AC didn't work well and was always set at 16°C and was still too hot
  • There was a large closet but only one hanger
  • There were no facecloths and only two bath towels
  • The sheets and blanket had small tears in them
  • There was no pen or paper for writing
  • No 'do not disturb signs' for the door (I believe you could ask for them at guest services)
  • One roll of our toilet paper was scented? Not great for people with allergies

Bars

  • 8 bars to choose from
  • Drinks were made strong and from good quality booze
  • Wine was given in a plastic cup

Buffet

  • There are three buffet areas; the main, the North buffet (which is smaller) and one for returning guests
  • The food for the most part was fresh and varied day to day
  • There were food options for Vegetarians & Children
  • If you missed the breakfast, lunch or dinner (7am - 10:00am, 12:15 - 3pm, 6:30 - 10pm) there is a grill you can have snacks (throughout the day) however the options are limited to greasy food - hamburgers, hot dogs, grilled cheese (the only Veg option)
  • There wasn't a great array of seafood, only white fish
  • They used a lot of oil in their cooking
  • Rainy days meant less tables!

A la Cartes

  • There are 4 a la cartes; chinese, italian,
  • We had dinner at the Ginger Lily (Chinese) and it was delicious the portions were HUGE and they treated you very well as guests
  • A la cartes must be booked two days in advance and are often full before you have a chance to book your dinner.  I suggest booking right at 9am for each day you are able to

Beach

  • The beach spans the length of the resort (1300ft) and you can go past the gate on the left side of the resort however I did not feel safe in doing so, so we didn't venture out
  • The water had some garbage floating in it and it didn't appear that staff maintained the beach (raked the sand) that well
  • The beach area was quite small compared to other resorts
  • There are a limited amount of beach chairs which are usually all reserved by 10am so it is very rare you will get two chairs side by side
  • Chairs are 'reserved' by placing your beach towel over them.
  • The brochure stated they had water trampolines but there were none there just water rings

Tours

  • Jamaica's industry is tourism so there is plenty to see and do
  • Tours of Ocho Rios - a link of most of the tours.  I did not use this company, am only providing for your refernce

Staff

  • I love the Jamaican people, they are very friendly and laid back
  • Had to ask twice for an extra pillow in our room

Internet Room

  • 4 computer terminals and 4 empty stations for laptops (bring your own)
  • The hotel has wifi access in specific locations; lobby, Internet room and some suites in the South tower
  • Cost is $5USD for an hour (the leftover minutes can be saved for another day) or $30USD for a week (which is the better deal)
  • The Internet speed is fairly fast but fluctuated day to day
  • The Internet dude at his desk often offered up his own computer when the line ups got too long.  Surprisingly enough, the wait was only 10-20 mins at peak times.  Guests were nice about not spending too much time online
  • It would have been nice if they had more terminals

Pools

  • The 5 pools were well maintained and clean
  • The temperature was nice and not too cold
  • Two swim up pool bars
  • Giant waterslide however there were many gaps between tubes and Clayton said that it hurt his back going down, despite looking like a great attraction, not many people used it

Activities

  • Two tennis courts (not sure where they were!?)
  • Jamaica n' me crazy disco (to which we didn't go to but the sound was contained)
  • Kayaks, water bikes, and catamarans (guided or non)
  • They had a 'library' but didn't contain very many books and no magazines to read

Kids Stuff

  • There is a section for kids to play in the pool (gated) and a poor example of a water park
  • From speaking to another Mom with two children (7 and 6) she complained that there wasn't enough things for the children to do.  The Mongoose day camp (ages 2 - 12)  was held indoors (in a gloomy looking room).  She wasn't impressed and didn't feel that the resort *really* catered to families
  • Another Mom stated they didn't have a crib on hand for her infant

Gift Shop

  • All prices were in USD and I heard that they only took USD but saw Jamaican dollars in the til
  • The souvenirs appeared to be quality and the prices were reasonable
  • The prices for sunscreen were way too much.  One bottle of spray screen was $20USD
  • Stock levels were low and some guests bought entire supplies of things!
  • No books or magazines to buy

Gym

Clayton used the gym a few days and said it has mostly what he needed

  • Air conditioned with Cybex exercise equipment, aerobics classes and free weights
  • Could use more weights and mirrors

Casino

  • Electronic Black Jack & 80 slot machine

Aqua Azul Spa

  • Open daily 9am - 6pm
  • Very nice facility, reasonable prices
  • Spa facilities include three wet rooms offering a host of hydrotherapy treatments, single and two couples massage rooms, two facial rooms, and separate steam and sauna facilities for men and women. Salon services include hair, make-up and manicure/pedicure treatments.
  • Provided receipts for insurance reimbursement
  • They do not offer hair cuts for men

Today I am going to Jamaica

Blogged on February 19, 2010

It has been over a year since Clayton and I took our last vacation (babymoon in Puerto Vallarta Nov 08) and it was just about time to take off again and get some rest!  Not to mention to avoid the craziness of the Olympics coming to town (Go Canada Go!)

So I searched on every frickin' travel site for two weeks eventually giving up.  Clayton wanted to go to the Mayan Riviera (to see the ruins) and I wanted to spend less/around $1000pp.  We had fixed dates from when we were to leave so that made it difficult to 'find a deal', also throw on Valentines day and the start of the Olympics and that meant:

  1. most of the hotels were already booked
  2. the more desirable vacations were at least $1600

So on recommendation from my Mom, I went into a Travel Centre in Burnaby to ask about their specials.  Our representative, Courtney was able to find us an awesome deal!  No, it wasn't Mexico but it was JAMAICA!  A place I didn't think we'd visit unless we had at least $4000 each to spend on a trip, which wouldn't be for...ever.   Here are the details:

We booked the trip on Feb 1st, leaving on Feb 12th - 19th.  We couldn't wait!  My Mom flew in from the Island to pick up my little man.  I cried when they left on the ferry (I wouldn't let her fly him back, the plane is too small and I was terrified of it crashing into the sea).  They left on the 10th, leaving us a full day to prepare for our trip.  Our flight was scheduled to fly out on Feb 12th at 7am.

Here is the start of my journal, which I finger pecked into my Ipod Touch!

Clayton and I got up at 4am and rushed around doing last minute packing.  Ginny, Clayton's mom picked us up at 4:30 and we headed out.  A quick stop to get another bottle of sunscreen and we were at the airport by 5am.  There was a long lineup at checking but it went fast.  We first stopped at duty free cause Clayton wanted new cologne.  I took a peek at the price of a perfume I liked (orange by Hugo Boss).  While Clayton did his purchase I wandered around and was happily surprised to see that he bought me the perfume!! Spoiled I am :)  Stopped at A&W for breakfast and the headed for screening.  There is quite a bit of Olympics adverts all over the ap.  The coolest thing?  A giant touchscreen phone!  I had to get my pic with one of the mascots.  A quick wait and we boarded.

The plane was packed!  We are all bound for Montego Bay.  No movie screens in the back of the head rests :( and no food or snacks!  I thought if the flight was over a certain time period we got food.  Thanks for nothing Air Canada.  The in flight movie is "where the wild things are" which I haven't seen but I chose to read instead.  I even slept a bit and when I woke, I declared, "Are we there yet?!". Nope!  3hrs to go. Oy vey!

Clayton got hungry and bought lunch.  A bag of apples with caramel and a veggie Samich.  $9.00.  The apples were fresh but the caramel was wayyy too sweet.  Clayton said the samich was "crappy".  Other than that, nothing too exciting.  We are the middle row, I am in the middle seat and C is on my right.

The inside cabin is quite well maintained but I was surprised to see all the bathrooms needed some paint, repair and updating.  Perhaps IKEA could help them out.  Nice colors and maybe a chandelier?  I opened one of the doors to see a stack of rather large sanitary napkins, at least Air Canada is looking after any surprise periods on the plane!

It is now around noon, I have been reading my book - Erased by Jim Krusoe.  It started off good but by page 176 (out of 160) I am lost in a sea of literacy.  The steward walks by with a cup of Mr. Noodles.  Mmmmmm.  I discover they are on the menu.  I guess I wil eat.  I choose the Quiznos chicken wrap (very tasty) and ask for the carrots.  They are sold out ( this always happens to me!) I ask for the cheese and crackers.  Sold out Grrrrr I settle on the raisin bran muffin (delicious) and try to forget the high calorie content I just consumed.

Well I finished the book and it wasn't great, now I have 1.5hrs to kill before we land and THEN an almost 2hr bus ride to our hotel.  Lots of traveling to get to paradise.

We stopped for drinks and a wee on the side of the road.  A little gift shop, upstairs bar and pretty sketchy washrooms (the doors didn't lock!) We were there about 1/2 Hr and then back on the road.  We speak to a couple from edm who paid $200 less for the same hotel :(  The ride was insanely long!  The sky grew dark by 6pm (Jamaica time) and we finally got to the resort  at 7:30pm which made me nervous cause we were starving and past experience lead us to go to bed hungry as all the food was put away.

Sooo we arrive thru the gates and wow the resort is enormous! We are told to check in as our luggage is already neatly put in rows in the lobby! We are served yummy juice until we are served.  check in is quick, they ask for my credit card and I am confused about when we get our safe lock and towel pass, I found out later I went to the wrong desk and have to wait til tomorrow.  We have our suitcases delivered to our room and we tip the dude $2usd before I read in our guide that tipping is  ot permitted (yay more money for us) I did however bring some flags and Olympic stuff to hand out.

The resort is beautiful and very modern and clean.  We head to our room on the 9th floor.  it is a plain room in need of a makeover.  The bed is super firm.  Ugh.  We did get a king sized bed I asked for.  We drop our gear and head to the buffet.  Sooooo yummy huge array of fresh food.  I was very impressed.  Besides the usual foreign peoples walking around, there were resort kitties scavenging for food!    Then after dinner we walked around the grounds which were so beautiful even in the dark.  We were warned that the beach was small and yes it is.  There are a few separate sections of it but we will have to comment morewhen we see it in the am.

It is only 7:30pm (bc time) but we are exhausted.  The ac in the hotel room is full blast cold yet it is still hot.  The Live music is loud.  The  last thing to mention about the room.  Ice bucket, tea station, iron &board, shampoo and soap dispwnsers are good.  Could do with some face towels and one extra pillow would be nice.  I am going to inquire tomorrow about a room upgrade.  We were asleep by 11 and that's about when the live show ended.  The singing was terrible, there was no need to watch it downstairs as we could hear it quite well with the doors shut and ac on.

We slept quite well despite the firm mattress and the room wasn't too hot but the ac could be colder.  The morning came and I felt we had slept the day away.  A knock on the door early, we told them to go away! Seriously, why disturb guests who JUST flew in the night before??   Turns out it was Senior, our Air Canada vacations dude...we

slept past orientation.  I have never gone in my 5 all inclusives.  We had lunch (again yummy).  We checked out the gift store, grill ( which wasn't very impressive, especially for C who couldn't eat 99% of the food.  We inquired about renting a car which was a min. of $50USD per day with a refundable $1200USD deposit charged to the old Visa!  We might pass! We are thinking of doing a raft ride ($75USD).  We also sign up for our ala carte which has to be done two days in advance.  We book the Chinese food restaurant for Tues but am thinking of cancelling due to its mainly meat menu.  I paid $5USD for an hour of Internet (which has no expiry) the first time I used it, the connection was super slow but it got better.    There are only 4 stations.

Dinner, again was awesome (well *I* thought so) but I skipped dessert, they weren't that good.  I did have one whole alcoholic drink today (yep, just one) I ordered a British bulldog which o remembered from last time was a paralyzer but I think he used rum!! Lol We had a quiet night in.  Talked to my mom on the phone (she called the 1-800 # and asked for our room #). Hearing my baby boys voice made me cry and want to go home :(. He is doing well, teething and has now learned to point when asked where the "tic-toc" (grandfather clock) is.  This is something I was taught to do at Masons Age too.

Clayton fell asleep just before 11 and I guess I should sleep now too.  We aren't the partying type.  Besides we were left a note by Senior that we must meet him tomorrow for bus & flight confirmations as well as booking our tours!  So we get up early (yawn) to head to the orientation only to find out that we just needed to 'tell' him we were there so he could ensure us a spot on the bus going back to the airport.   We decided to not book any tours as they were just too expensive.  (The ride with the dolphin's thing...$200USD).  I didn't bring that much cash with us!

This is where my journaling ended, one can only type so much on a Touch.  So I will just write a summary of the rest of the trip and following this blog will be another post on staying at the Sunset Jamaica Grande and what you need to know!

We booked a spa couple package for Valentines Day ♥ ; 1 hour full body massage and a soak in their hydro therapy tub (which was actually just a giant jetted bathtub).  We also received a tray full of fresh fruit which was nice.  The massage was awesome and very relaxing.  The tub was a great way to end the session.

The rest of our trip wasn't that eventful as the weather wasn't great.  I'd say there were 4 days of rain/overcast/blah.  Leaving only 3 full days of nice-ish/hot weather.  This was disappointing and made me want to retreat to the Internet cafe to spend more time online because other than napping and eating, there isn't much to do.  I finished another book - Little Bee by Chris Cleave that I highly recommend!

We met a few nice couples (with kids) and caught a few shows.  Spent some $$ in the gift shop which had some quality items and did a lot of walking around the grounds.

All in all it was a nice vacation, I got to catch up on 1.5 years worth of sleep but I missed my little boy terribly and am glad I am home now!

Vegetarian Won Ton Soup

Blogged on February 9, 2010

In one of my previous recipe posts I mentioned that I get great recipe ideas from newsletters I subscribe to.  This one is courtesy of Knorr (pronounced k-nor) which looked delicious and I'm excited to try it out tonight!

Vegetable Won Ton Soup

Prep Time: 15 minutes   Cooking Time: 15 Minutes

Makes 6 servings

The link is here

  • 1 package of fried rice (I used Zatarain’s Dirty Rice which had a nice kick to it)
  • 1 package of Yves Original veggie ground round*
  • 12 cups of water
  • 4 cubes of vegetable bouillon (I used McCormick all-vegetable)
  • 1 tsp fresh ginger, minced
  • 1 carrot, sliced thin
  • 24 won ton wrappers
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • 3 green onions, sliced

Directions

Prepare rice and ground round (*the original recipe didn't call for ground round but the box of rice did) according to package directions omitting the margarine (The Zatarain's didn't call for margarine but it did suggest oil, which I used). Let cool for 5 to 10 minutes.

Meanwhile, bring water to a rolling boil. Add vegetable bouillon cubes, minced ginger and carrot. Once cubes are dissolved, reduce heat to medium and cover.

To fill won tons, working with one wrapper at a time*, place 1 tsp (5 mL ) rice in the centre of each wrapper. Moisten the edges with a small amount of water on your finger and fold the wrapper in half to form a triangle. Moisten and gather the left and right corners together over the filling pinch them together to form a “bundle”. Repeat with the remaining filling and wrappers.

Drop wontons into hot soup and cook for 5 minutes. Add sesame oil and green onions and serve!

* keep wonton wrappers covered with a slightly damp cloth to prevent drying both while prepping and after they are made. Tips: Wontons can be made ahead of time in bulk and kept in the freezer for up to 2 months. Boil right from frozen. Add your own favorite Asian veggies to the soup!

The verdict?

OMG can you say vegedelicious?!? Not only was this easy to make (even though everything was from scratch) it was so yummy.  The wontons were light and the broth delicious, I pretty much followed the instructions except I dumped the onions in with the carrots, I don't think it made much of a difference.  As for the ingredients, I purchased everything at Safeway.  I had a hard time finding the oil which was with the rest of the oil but they only sold one bottle [Spectrum Naturals].  It was $7.15 for 375ml.  The label suggests keeping it in the fridge after opening and consuming within 10-12 weeks of opening.  I guess I will be making a LOT of soup to use that stuff up!  The won ton wrappers were also difficult to find and I located them with the tofu products, again there was only one brand available.

While I was on the Internets I decided to visit Yves Veggie site to view their other products and I was happy to see they had a newsletter (=more recipes!) So I signed up immediately.  I hope I get some coupons :)

For this meal, I give it a 10/10!

Knorr's Veggie Won Ton Soup*                     My pale lack of veggies showing Won Ton Woup

*Did you know that most food in magazines and on tv isn't edible? The food is so doctored that it cannot be eaten.  In comparing the two pictures, my dinner looks horrid but I can ensure you it was delicious!  Maybe bigger carrot pieces next time :)
